Thomas Cochrane (1775-1860), 10th Earl of Dundonald
Print. Text below image: 'Lord Cochrane. Done from life and Published by Adam Buck 17 Bentinck St. Man Sq. Price 2[...]'. Above image: 'Plate 4, Of Friends to a Constitutional Reform of Parliament'. This charismatic and controversial Scottish naval officer, who eventually rose to admiral in the Royal Navy as well as being a major figure in the South American independence movement, only succeeded to the earldom of Dundonald late in life and during his active career was known by the courtesy title of Lord Cochrane. His exploits during the the Anglo-French wars of 1793-1815 and some afterwards (and not least because he published his own memoirs to retell them and counter his many detractors), later made him one of the prime models for the fictional deeds of both C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower and Patrick O'Brian's Captain Jack Aubrey. [PvdM 10/15]
