Admiral Earl Howe. D. Orme Sculpt. Historical Engraver to his Majesty & the Prince of Wales
An oval bust-length portrait of Richard Howe, Earl Howe (1726–1799) in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, with the star of the Order of the Garter and a flag officer’s gold medal and chain for the Battle of the Glorious First of June in 1794. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Admiral Earl Howe’, and the production detail: ‘D. Orme sculpt. Historical Engraver to his Majesty & the Prince of Wales.’ This portrait was engraved and published by Daniel Orme. The likeness is based on Mather Brown’s history painting of Lord’s Howe on the deck of the ‘Queen Charlotte’ at the Battle of the Glorious First of June (see BHC2740), which Orme exhibited in his print shop on Holles Street and engraved (see PAH7879). This print was published in 1798 and includes the star of the Order of the Garter, to which Howe was appointed in June 1797. This impression has been cut down, removing the lower part of the print below the title. (Updated June 2019.)
