Sr Martin Frobisher Knight. The noble flames that glow'd in his stout brest could ne're be quencet, nor by that ice opprest. Of Northerne Seas; His praise let him not want. Whole worth deserves a print of Adamant. That he may still guide ships: whose fame let grow. So long as sea shall have an ebbe and flow. AH

Frobisher made three voyages to present-day Arctic Canada, from 1576 to 1578, originally to discover the NorthWest Passage. This aim quickly transformed into rash speculation when some ore he brought back was thought to contain gold. It was later proved worthless, and one of the expeditions’ backers was bankrupted as a result. Although Frobisher did not find the Passage or gold, he did discover Frobisher Bay south of Baffin Island.
