On board the Type 12 frigate Lowestoft (1960) in No. 3 basin at Chatham Dockyard near the end of her modernisation which commenced 15 March 1968 and finished 31 May 1970. She was in the basin throughout May 1970. The photographer is standing on the port side of the forecastle (1 deck) at 11 station looking forward and to starboard showing the twin headed capstan, chain pipes and hawse. Awning stanchions have been erected. Berthed ahead is the survey vessel Fox (1967) and against the west side of the basin are a tank cleaning vessel and a modern water boat. On the north side of the basin is the type 14 utility frigate Exmouth (1955) converted to gas turbine propulsion and operating as a unit of the 2nd Frigate Squadron.
