On board the Type 12 frigate Lowestoft (1960) in No. 3 basin at Chatham Dockyard near the end of her modernisation which commenced 15 March 1968 and finished 31 May 1970. She was in the basin throughout May 1970. The photographer is in the passageway, known as the Burma Road, between 49 and 63 stations on 2 deck looking to starboard and forward from 58 station showing the open hatch on the left leading down to the junior rates' mess on 3 deck. A Vendo cold drinks vending machine is next to the hatch and it is selling Pepsi-Cola, Zing lemon and lime, Zing orange and a still orange flavour drink at 6d (2½ pence) each. A damage control cupboard and a ventilation trunk are between the vending machine and the door to No. 1 senior ratings mess. On the right is the compressor for the sick bay air conditioning unit.
