On board the Type 12 frigate Lowestoft (1960) in No. 3 basin at Chatham Dockyard near the end of her modernisation which commenced 15 March 1968 and finished 31 May 1970. She was in the basin throughout May 1970. The photographer is in the emergency conning position between 46 and 47½ stations on 01 deck looking to port showing a rudder indicator unit on the forward rail. On the port rails are a box stowage for hand signalling lanterns, a type IV 8 way telephone control box and six other electrical boxes. Scaffolding is on the right. The ship is berthed starboard side to the quay.
