'HMS Frolic 1850'
Inscribed, as title, lower right by the unknown but clearly very competent artist. The vessel shown is the third of the name in the Royal Navy, a 16-gun, 511-ton sloop launched in 1842 and sold in 1864. Although usually classed as a brig, the Frolic is shown, as in the lithograph by Madely, with an additional mast. The manner suggests that of O.W. Brierly, but the drawing - essentially in ink highlighted with watercolour wash - may just be by of a good naval amateur. [PvdM 11/13]
