On board the Type 12 frigate HMS Berwick (1959) alongside the south wall in No.3 basin at Chatham Dockyard, near the end of her modernization which commenced 4 December 1967 and completed 4 June 1971. The photographer is looking aft from 12 station on the centreline of the forecastle deck showing the exhaust fan vents, a washdeck locker and four cable/hawser reels between the two breakwaters. Aft of No. 2 breakwater are more exhaust fan vents, a flexible hose couplings locker, the 4.5 inch shell room flooding cabinet and deck stowage for ventilators and fuel hoses. The 4.5 inch twin gun turret is in the background with wooden seat covers for bollards on either side of it. Awning stanchions are rigged. The ship is berthed starboard side to the basin wall.
