Loss of the Kent East Indiaman

Lithograph. Hand-coloured print of the stern and starboard side of the East Indiaman, Kent (1825), seen here on fire and listing to starboard in the heavy seas of the Bay of Biscay. Smoke billows from the deck. An inverted red ensign has been hoist as a sign of distress and a red pennant flies from the top of the main mast. Only sails three sails remain aloft with the spanker reefed loosely at the stern. Two lifeboats have been lowered from the davits into the waves with crew manning the oars, the remainder of the crew and passengers are crowded at the stern. A spar falls from the rigging and, in the foreground, a large piece of broken rigging floats in the water. To the right in the distance, a brig approaches the stricken ship.
