Wreck of the ship Governor Ready in Torres Straits

A lithograph of the wreck of the convict ship ‘Governor Ready’ in the Torres Strait in 1829. Chartered to transport 200 convicts to Batavia, via Sydney, she left Hobart on April 2nd, 1829, but ran onto a coral reef in Torres Strait. Everyone on board safely abandoned ship using her lifeboats, and eventually landed safely at Timor after fourteen days at sea. The ship is shown half-submerged, her tilting masts and rigging dramatically outlined against the setting sun. Three small vessels crammed with survivors stand off to the right, one still attached by a rope to her bow. Men can be seen bailing water from the jolly boat furthest right.
