The cargo steamer Blue Jacket (1882) aground off Longships Lighthouse.
A starboard broadside view of the iron screw cargo steamer Blue Jacket (1882) aground on the rocks off Longships Lighthouse, Land's End. The ship is semi-submerged from the stern to just after the bridge with waves breaking along its side. The photographer was in a boat near by to take this photograph.
The negative is a copy negative from an original Gibson photographic print.
At 5pm on 9 November 1898 Blue Jacket left Plymouth Sound on passage during thick weather and an east-south-east wind for Cardiff. The ship was in ballast. At 11.55pm it ran into the rocks about 30-50 feet below Longships Lighthouse. The crew, including the captain's wife, took to the boats and at about 2am on 10 November were rescued by the Sennan Cove lifeboat. The captain had his Master's Certificate suspended for six months. The ship was a total loss. [See Wreck Report court proceedings]. The ship broke in two on 14 November and the stern sank
