The cargo steamer South America (1900) aground near Merthen Point, St Loy.
A starboard bow view of the cargo steamship South America (1900) grounded on the shore in St Loy's Cove (Paynter's Cove) near Merthen Point, Cornwall. A ship's lifeboat and the RNLI lifeboat are alongside the hull off the starboard side below the bridge. The photographer is standing on the rocks and small boulders looking south, out to sea.
The South America was on voyage from Hamburg to Cardiff in ballast when it went aground below Methen Point in a moderate west south-west gale. The crew self-rescued before the RNLI lifeboat arrived. The ship was eventually abandoned after attempts to salvage it.
