On board the Type 81 frigate Gurkha (1960) alongside the fitting out berth of John I Thornycroft & Co Ltd at Woolston, Southampton. The photographer is on the port side of 1 deck at 35 station looking forward and to starboard showing the forecastle. The single 4.5 inch Mark V gun mounting is on the right with rocker flare launcher rails fixed to the shield. The ship's bell is mounted on the point of the breakwater. Various ropes are flaked out on the deck alongside the anchor cables. In the right background berthed on the Itchen Quays is the cross-channel passenger ferry Invicta (1940) which was at Southampton for modernisation of her accommodation towards the end of 1962.
