Book 1st. Introduction to Drawing Ships. A Ninety Eight Gun Ship on the Stocks
Technique includes etching.; Plate No.1.; Stored in folder with PAD7472-PAD7478. The title plate of a set of eight aquatints originally published in 1788 by Sayer (1725-94), loose bound under a plain cover ( see ZBA4931). The plates were reissued in this set by Laurie & Whittle as his successors, under their imprint and simply adding 'Book 1st ' ahead of Sayer's title on this initial plate.
Robert Laurie and James Whittle succeeded Sayer from 1794 (though effectively from 1792 under the short-lived trade name of Robert Sayer and Co.) until 1812, when Laurie died and was succeeded by his son Richard Holmes Laurie. Until 1818, when Whittle died, the firm was Whittle & Laurie, and thereafter R.H. Laurie until after the latter's death in 1858. Its successor business still exists, publishing yachting material from St Ives (Cambs), as Imray, Laurie, Norie & Wilson.
