Thermometer case
Cylindrical thermometer case made of varnished dark wood with smooth edges. String is wound round where the lid meets the main tube and is held together with red sealing wax. This case is lined with green material. This is one of four thermometer cases (AST1044-AST1047). The cases are grouped together in a bag with two accompanying notes. The first is by a past curator and reads "Herschel Collection given by Mrs Shorland. 28.VII.58". The second is by William James Herschel on the back of an evelope addressed to "The Lady Herschel, Collingwood, Hawkhurst". This reads "The 4 delicate equichyeaker thermometers market [in symbols] alpha, beta, gamma, delta one by John Crichton Glasgow - cost £6:6:0 see his letter to my father dated Charlotte St, Glasgow Oct 29 1800" below this in different ink "[in symbols] delta is the only one found surviving 9 June 1888. the corrn is recorded by [in symbols] delta = JH, an experiment in snow, with "Newnan's Standard" to be -0.157. WJH".
