Ship off a lighthouse at night in a rough sea
Although not titled or dated, this is probably be a view of the Eddystone Lighthouse, off Plymouth (and more specifically John Smeaton's stone tower of which the uppper part now stands on Plymouth Hoe, following its replacement in the 1880s). As an illustration it is a late example in a 19th-century tradition that includes similar views by Turner, Stanfield and other artists. Constituted under a Royal Charter granted by Henry VIII in 1514, the Corporation of Trinity House is the General Lighthouse Authority for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar. Today, the Corporation maintains 72 lighthouses, all of which are fully automated. The automated lighthouses are monitored and controlled from the Trinity House Operations Control Centre in Harwich, Essex.
