Admiral Lord Duncan. From a Picture by Hopner, Engraved by R. Cooper, for Captn Brenton's Naval History

A bust-length portrait of Adam Duncan (1731–1804) in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, with a flag officer’s gold medal for the Battle of Camperdown and the sash and star of the Russian Imperial Order of Saint Alexander Nevsky. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Admiral Lord Duncan / From a Picture by Hoppner. Engraved by R. Cooper for Capt. Brenton’s Naval History.’ This portrait was engraved by R. Cooper after John Hoppner’s full-length oil painting of 1798. Hoppner’s painting was produced for Forfar Town and County Hall in eastern Scotland and exhibited in 1798 at the Royal Academy (see PAH5451 for James Ward’s mezzotint of the painting). This print was published by Henry Colburn in 1836 as an illustration for Edward Pelham Brenton’s ‘The Naval History of Great Britain, from the Year MDCCLXXXIII to MDCCCXXXVI’ (London: Henry Colburn, 1837), volume 1, page 347.
