Captain Cook's Headdress
Rebecca Jewell is an artist whose work focuses on historical and cultural exchange, in particular between Pacific and European cultures. Captain Cook's Headdress reflects on the history of visual and material exchange between the peoples of the Pacific and European explorers, raising questions about the ways in which these experiences have been understood over time.
The headdress is made of hand-printed goose and turkey feathers collaged onto archival mount board using ph neutral pva glue. The inks are oil-based etching inks from intaglio printmakers.
The process is paper litho transfer method using images from Cook's voyages and Banks' Florilegium. Many of the images featured on the headdress are in the collection of the Museum.
