A metal token depicting Greenwich
A metal token, on the obverse incised with crude view of the Old Royal Naval College (then, the Greenwich Hospital) from the Thames, the reverse reads 'Jn Resley, Greenwich School 1782'.
While it is not known why this token was made - it may have been a student exercise, perhaps - tokens like this were sometimes given by sailors to people on shore, including sweethearts. A search of the National Archives suggests that Jn Resley was not officially affiliated with Greenwich Hospital at the time that this was made, but it is possible that he was a pensioner or a relative of someone who was. The carving, while charming, is quite naive and suggests that the maker was not a professional engraver.
