A brigantine and brig grounded with lines ashore.

A salted paper print. Port bow view of a grounded unidentified brig with a brigantine next to it off its starboard side. Lines are ashore from the bows. A small ship's boat is grounded on the beach next to the brig. The yards of the brig's fore and main masts have been scandalized (an acute angle to the mast).

Reverse has been annotated in pencil by Admiral Ballard in 1934: '-?- -?- [illegible] aground. Hennemans Sun Picture No. 13'

This is an original print from the original negative P7CAL. A close-up bow view of the brigantine and brig aground is P6CAL, which corresponds with the negative described as 166. Brig aground, leaky'.

In a letter dated 3 November 1846 to WHF Talbot from Calvert Jones, he lists the Swansea negatives and includes '166. Brig aground, leaky' [BL, LA46-123]. This is further confirmed in a letter dated 23 October 1847 to William Fox Talbot, Calvert Jones mentions this negative as having been sent to Nicolaas Henneman for printing and describes it as '166. Brig aground leakey'. [see BL, reference LA47-86]. Jones had arrived back in England from his European trip in early June 1846 to sort out the afffairs of his dead uncle.
