Henry Hotham's action in HMS 'Northumberland' against the French off L'Orient , 22 May 1812
A plan detail of the approaches to L'Orient with the 'Point of View' marked in pencil by Pocock and, below, a corresponding sketch of the composition he proposed to paint for Henry Hotham of the action. Between is a stern view detail of the frigate shown in the bottom sketch and a rough track line indicates a course round the Ile de Groix, off the coast. At the bottom Pocock has written, in ink, 'No. 3' and 'Mr Pocock has left the Note to Captain Hotham open in hopes Lady Edmonstone would have the Goodness to look over Mr Ps remarks on the Plan & his choice of the Point of View previous to forwarding it to Capt Hotham'. Two other pencil notes, possibly by Pocock or later, confirm the action's identity. Above the ink message Hotham himself has briefly agreed the idea with the pencil note 'Approved H Hotham'.
