Capture of the 'Resistance' (40) and 'Constance' (22) by 'San Fiorenzo' (44) and 'Nymphe' (36) off Brest, 9 March 1797
A preliminary sketch, which was commissioned by Lady Neale, for the oil painting of Sir Harry Neale's action of 1797 (BHC0495). The plan at the top is inscribed '1st View', with the scene it represents below. Pocock subsequently altered the composition for the reason explained on his final pencil sketch version (PAD8745). There are slight hull sketches on the reverse and the paper is watermarked 1796. Exhibited: NMM Pocock exhib. (1975) no 76.
