The Hochdonn Viaduct and the Kiel Canal from on board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) while on passage from Kiel to Norfolk, Virginia. The photographer is looking aft from the starboard side of 1 deck amidships showing a black American enlisted man, probably a cook, by the ship's rail. The French Naval Academy sail training topsail schooners La Belle Poule (1932) and L'Etoile (1932), seen from fine off their port bow, are motoring in the canal and the north side of the Hochdonn Bridge is in the background. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment.
