On board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) while on a voyage from Kiel to Norfolk, Virginia. The photographer is on the port side of 01 deck aft looking forward showing some of the crew lined up on deck ready to carry out an highline transfer evolution with the destroyer James C Owens (1944) which is nearly alongside. The line running crew are dressed in red overalls and are wearing life jackets. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment. Only the bow of the James C Owens (1944), hull number 776, is in the picture.
