'Stirring up the fire. Benga, 1924'
A slightly distant view of a group of Fijians in traditional clothes stirring a large fire with long poles and creating a lot of smoke. Other Fijians are watching. To the left of the image is European man in solar topi standing looking down, perhaps at a camera lens.
The previous photograph is captioned 'preparing the fire for firewalkers' and is taken in the same place a little before this photograph. The photograph was taken on the island of Benga [Beqa] off the coast of Fiji, near the settlement of Suva.
Lt. Surtees was on board the light cruiser HMS Danae from October 1923 as part of the Special Service Squadron that toured the world from 1923-1924. The ship visited Fiji between 21 and 27 May 1924 before heading to Honolulu, arriving in early June.
