'Boom logging. Victoria'
A view of a large log boom, made up of felled Douglas Fir trunks rafted together, secure along the shore near Victoria, British Columbia. On the shoreline are three single-story buildings built on large logs and timbers to keep them level above the tide line. In the background is (possibly) a timber mill.
Lt Surtees was on the light cruiser HMS Danae from October 1923 during the British Special Service Squadron world tour between 1923 and 1924. Danae was at Equimault, Canada from 21 June to 4 July with the other light cruisers while the Hood, Repulse and Adelaide went to Vancouver and Victoria.
