A view of Cook's Monument on the shore of Kaelakekua Bay, Hawaii.
A photograph of the large white pedestal-mounted obelisk commemorating Captain James Cook's death. The monument was built close to the spot where Cook was killed, on the north shore of Kaelakekua Bay. The bollards connecting the chain-link barrier around the monument came from HMS Fantome (1873) in 1876.
Captain Frederick Bedford was on board the ironclad HMS Triumph (1870) while serving on the Pacific Station in 1879. The ship visited Hawaii between 2 and 3 April 1879 when they departed at 10pm for Honolulu.
