A view of the front of the 'Iolani Palace, Honolulu
A view of the front of the 'Iolani Palace at Honolulu taken from the drive looking across a circular patch of grass to the front steps leading to the veranda and front door. It served as the official residence for the monarch and was mainly used for state functions. This palace was pulled down and replaced by the current palace in 1879, the new palace being completed in November 1882.
The print has the caption: 'The Oilani Palace.'
Captain Frederick Bedford was on board the ironclad HMS Triumph (1870) while serving on the Pacific Station in 1879. The ship visited Honolulu between 5 and 16 April 1879 when they departed for Esquimalt with HMS Opal in company.
