The town and anchorage at Hammerfest, Norway.
The town and anchorage at Hammerfest, Norway. The photographer is looking west from the top of the zig-zag path on the Sadlen showing the main town with the Parish Church on the right and the Grand Hotel beyond it. A motor bus and two motor cars are on the harbourside on the right and near them is the shop of Herreekviperingen. All of the buildings are of wooden construction. The town of Hammerfest was totally destroyed by German forces in early 1945 and none of the buildings in this photograph survived. At anchor in the distance and seen from just abaft her port beam is the Canadian Pacific Steamships passenger cruise ship Empress of Australia (1914). The island of Sörö is in the background.
