A German Albatros fighter aircraft
Inscribed by the arist, as title. This is a study of an Albatros D.III single seat fighter of the Imperial German air force. The type entered squadron service on the Western Front in December 1916 and a small number were still operational on this front into September 1918. Wyllie represents the aircraft from astern and to its left, without a pilot in the cockpit. A tentative sketch of an aircraft wing, possiblly with a British roundel on the right, appears below under the inscription.
