The Plaza Independencia at Montevideo, Uruguay. The photographer is looking west from the top of the Palacio Salvo on the east side of the square. The General Artigas Mausoleum is in the centre of the square and the Hotel Restaurant Condal is facing the west side of the square. The domed and twin towered Catedral Metropolitana is in the left background. Cargo ships are anchored in the outer harbour on the right and a Cunard White Star Line passenger cruise ship, seen from off her port bow, is alongside a berth. She is in all white livery and is either the Franconia (1923) or the Carinthia (1925).
