A distant view of the outskirts of Rhodes.
A distant view of the outskirts of Rhodes. The photographer is looking north-east-by-east from a hilltop to the south-west of the city showing the west coast beaches and the scattered buildings in the southern outskirts of the city. A number of medieval windmills are on the north-west coast and the large building in the background facing the north-east shore is the Grande Albergo Delle Rose hotel. The bell tower of the Evangelismos Church which was completed in 1925 is on the extreme right at the entrance to Mandraki harbour. Compare this image with negative number P94629 which was taken slightly later after the windmills had been demolished. Anchored offshore and seen from only just abaft her starboard beam is the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company passenger cruise ship Viceroy of India (1929).
