A coastal scene at La Spezia, Italy, probably in the region of Marola on the west side of the Golfo della Spezia. The photographer is on board an unidentified cruise ship anchored offshore looking forward from the port side of the forward promenade deck. The forecastle deck fittings of the cruise ship indicate that she is possibly the Orford (1928). Old fortifications and a concrete water tower are to the left of centre and four very tall lattice steel masts are on the right. On the extreme right and partially hidden by a building and the cruise ship's foremast is the Italian Navy cadet training ship Francesco Ferruccio (1902), probably laid up and awaiting disposal. Hills are in the background.
