A port broadside view of the auxiliary sail training schooner Sir Winston Churchill (1966) sailing out of Tynemouth harbour, taken during the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race in July 1993. The Sir Winston Churchill has the job, fore topsail and foresail set. Crew are in teh rigging and on the foreyards. A red ensign is flying from at the stern. Off the stern of Sir Winston Churchill is a white hulled Bermudan rigged sloop with its jib unfurled. A group of people can be seen sitting on the deck of the sloop. Off the port quarter is an unidentified grey vessel, possibly a patrol or coastguard, with "UHV 902" in white lettering on the superstructure. Behind both vessesl are two yachts. The front yacht has just the genoa set while the second has both the genoa and the main set. A variety of moored small craft can be seen on the left hand side of the image. A large group of people can be seen standing on South Shields Pier watching the sailing vessels go by. The wall of the Tynemouth Pier and a partial view of the back of a man's head is in the foreground.
