Map of the Suez Canal

Folded pictorial map of the Suez Canal, with inset map, depth profile and cross section. It presents layered stories of travel through the region, including the “supposed track of the Israelite crossing [of the Red Sea in the Hebrew Scriptures]”, “ancient crossing used by Abraham and the Holy Family”, the route of steamships through the canal, caravan routes across the Middle East and Maghreb, railways and roads. It demonstrates the contemporary discourse around the canal as a symbol of modernity in an ancient land, which persisted from the building of the canal well into the 20th century. Printed notes on the back of the chart refer to the 1956 nationalisation of the Canal. An earlier edition of this map was published by the Oriental and Commercial Bureau.
