Chichester (1753)
Scale: 1:48. A plan showing the stern board with taffrail and quarter piece decoration for Chichester (1753), a 68-gun Third Rate, two-decker, modified from the 1745 Establishment.
The stern board consists of a double-tailed mermaid on the left quarter piece and a sea serpent with a coiled scaly tail on the right. Below the serpent is a full-length female figure wearing a peplos, which has slipped from the right shoulder. This was to be repeated on the left side, as indicated by the ‘D⁰’ [ditto] below the mermaid. The taffrail centre is the coat of arms (leopard above a line with red drops below) for the city of Chichester with three castle towers behind. A cherub either side holds a roundel with ‘G’ on the left and ‘R’ on the right.
