Melampus (1820)

Scale: 1:48. A plan showing the top of the trail-board and figurehead for Melampus (1820), a 46-gun fifth Rate frigate. The figurehead was approved by the Surveyors of the Navy.

The colourwashed figurehead is a bust of a bearded male facing forward and wearing a crown of laurels. His body is covered in a blue, white and red cloak. Below the bust, at the top of the trail-board is a staff with a snake wrapped around it. The figurehead represents Melampus, a mythical seer and who had knowledge of the language of snakes. He also cured the daughters of Proteus of madness. Either, or both of these attributes may explain the snake and staff, usually associated with medicine. The reverse of the plan has 'Melampus Head' in pencil.

Initialled by Henry Peake [Surveyor of the Navy, 1806-1822], Joseph Tucker [Surveyor of the Navy, 1813-1831] and Robert Seppings [Surveyor of the Navy, 1813-1832].
