Unknown warship, possibly a proposal for Leviathan (1790)
Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the head, head-rails and trail-board and proposed figurehead for Leviathan (1790), a 74-gun Third Rate two-decker. The plan is undated but may relate to the ship’s Small to Middling Repair at Plymouth dockyard between November 1807 and August 1808. It is not known if it was approved.
The figurehead is a bust of Roman armour with two standards flying banners behind the armour and a cannon muzzle just below the lower trail-board cheek scroll. The armour consists of a plumed helmet held above the scale armour shirt by a vertical club emerging from the neck of the shirt. The right shoulder piece is the head of a lion, with ‘pteruges’ (stiff leather strips) around the armhole. Wider and more ornate ‘pteruges’ are around the lower tunic, hanging from the waist band.
The name ‘Leviathon’ is written in pencil at the top of the sketch.
