Blake, Swift, Revenge, NY, Texas, Arkansas, Wyoming, Princess Royal

The recto of the paper is divided into three horizontal sections. The top section features a sketch of a number of vessels off an unidentifiable coast.

The middle section shows the first-class cruiser ‘Blake’ (1889) serving as a depot ship for the 11th Destroyer Flotilla of the Grand Fleet of the Royal Navy. In the centre is the large destroyer ‘Swift’ (1907), which served in the Dover Flotilla from 1915 to 1919. On the right is the battleship ‘Revenge’ (1915), which was part of the 1st Battle Squadron of the Grand Fleet and was the flagship of the second-in-command of the Grand Fleet from November 1916 to mid-1919.

The bottom sketch is a general view of the 6th Battle Squadron of the Grand Fleet, which was comprised of only United States battleships. The US vessels depicted are: the ‘New York’ (1912), which arrived on 7 December 1917; the ‘Texas’ (1912), which arrived on 11 February 1918; the ‘Arkansas’ (1911), which arrived in July 1918, and the ‘Wyoming’ (1911), which arrived on 7 December 1917. On the right is the Royal Navy battlecruiser ‘Princess Royal’ (1911), which was part of the 1st Battlecruiser Squadron. The presence of the ‘Arkansas’ in this sketch dates it to between late July and 30 November 1918.

On the verso is a very rough sketch of the Firth of Forth with a large vessel on the right.
