HMS 'Courageous'
Inscribed by the artist at lower right on the watercolour, 'Courageous', and under the lower pencil sketch 'St Vin, Nep, Herc'. The 'light battlecruiser' 'Courageous' was built by Armstrong Whitworth on the Tyne, launched on 5 February 1916 and completed on 28 October 1916. She is shown here in 1918 at anchor in port broadside view, probably at Scapa Flow or in the Forth, with flying-off platforms fitted on both turrets. Given that the small pencil sketch on the white margin below is said to be of he battleships 'St Vincent' (1908), 'Neptune' (1909) and 'Hercules' (1910) in the Forth, presumably also in 1918, that may be the more likely location for both items.
