A port side view, taken from abaft the beam, of four spritsail barges and an oyster smack under sail at the start of a barge match in the Thames Estuary. On the left is the staysail barge Scone (1919) with PREEDCRETE on her white topsail and to starboard of her is the staysail barge Oak (1881) with a Duradon logo on her topsail. The oyster smack Kate (1883) has her port registry CK139 on her hull and mainsail. On the right is the bowsprit barge Gladys (1901) with a white jib and the Sunblest Bread logo on her topsail and beyond her is the staysail barge Repertor (1924) with all white sails and with a Crowned Head logo on her topsail
