Five spritsail barges under sail in Gravesend Reach, River Thames, at the start of a barge match.
Five spritsail barges under sail in Gravesend Reach, River Thames, at the start of a barge match. The photographer is looking across the river from Gravesend to Tilbury. Four of the barges can be identified by their topsail logos. The barge in the centre with her bow pointing towards the camera, with all white sails and the Crowned Head logo on her topsail is the Repertor (1924). Off her port quarter is the Scone (1919) with PREEDCRETE on her white topsail. On the left with a Blue Circle Cement logo on her topsail is the Mirosa (1892) and the barge with the Sunblest Bread logo is the Gladys (1901). A trot of moored motor barges is on the left of the picture.
