Five spritsail barges under sail in Gravesend Reach, River Thames, at the start of a barge match.
Five spritsail barges under sail in Gravesend Reach, River Thames, at the start of a barge match. The photographer is looking across the river from Gravesend to Tilbury. Two of the barges are hidden behind the other three and these three can be identified by their topsail logos. The barge on the right is the Scone (1919) with PREEDCRETE on her white topsail. On the left with a Blue Circle Cement logo on her topsail is the Mirosa (1892) and the barge in the centre with the Sunblest Bread logo is the Gladys (1901). A trot of moored motor barges is on the left of the picture.
