In the wheelhouse on board an unidentified cargo vessel related to the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company. The photographer is on the starboard side of the wheelhouse looking to port a man in a dirty blue boiler suit at the wheel and another man wearing a black and white patterned woollen jumper is beyond him. A ship's senior officer is standing by the central window looking forward through binoculars. The gold lace on his sleeve has not been recognised. It is two narrow rings surmounted by a wider ring topped with a diamond shape. The transparency has a tear in the lower right.
