The ship was in dry dock to inspect grounding damage received near Yokohama where the ship was calling to bunker when on voyage from Kamaishi to Calcutta. The bottom plating had been set up slightly and the deep tanks had been sealed with cement. The photographer was serving as an apprentice on board the ship.
