Two boy trainees working with the headsails on board the 3-masted topsail schooner Malcolm Miller (1968) when under sail in Spithead. The boys are wearing wet weather gear and one of the ship's officers is in the foreground. One boy is coiling a rope just ahead of the windlass and the other is sitting on the bowsprit making adjustments to the ropes. The fore staysail and inner jib are set but the outer jib and flying jib are stowed. The photographer is looking forward along the starboard side from abreast the companionway.
