Annual prizegiving day on board the boys' training ship Arethusa (1849) at her permanent moorings in the River Thames off Greenhithe, Kent. The photographer is looking aft from close alongside the port side of the mainmast on the upper deck. Boys in uniform are sat on benches listening to a speech being made by Lady Margaret Elizabeth Villiers, Countess of Jersey, who is standing on the poop facing forward. A number of special guests are sitting on the poop. Awnings are rigged over the deck and along the sides. A note on the negative states that the photographer was using Camera B.
