Francis Norris Adams has the oars and one of his sisters, Pauline or Isabel Mary, is in the boat with him. A crewman is sitting on the bow, having given the boat a shove to get her into the water. The Adams family refer to this boat as "the lifeboat". A number of coastal sailing craft are passing south through The Downs. A note on the negative says the photographer is using Camera B.
