This small collection of correspondence and accounts comprise the personal papers of William Child, a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Much of the correspondence is taken up with the sharing of family news, arranging visits, informing family when to write so as to catch him in port. William arranges for his brother to visit him on board the Royal George in Plymouth, where they are celebrating the anniversary of the Glorious First of June. Also included in the correspondence are William’s accounts of naval action, as he sends news back to his family. He gives a first-hand account of a 1795 engagement with a Spanish squadron in the Pertuis d’Antioche, off La Rochelle and Rochefort.
