A distant starboard side view, taken from abaft the beam, of the three masted barquentine Mary Ann (1863) in a sinking condition in The Downs.
A distant starboard side view, taken from abaft the beam, of the three masted barquentine Mary Ann (1863) in a sinking condition in The Downs. The North Deal lifeboat Mary Somerville (1888) is anchored astern of her and the Dover paddle tug Lady Vita (1882) is on the left. The Walmer lifeboat Civil Service No. 4 (1896) is in the foreground, seen from very fine off her port quarter, sailing towards the wreck. A note on the negative says the photographer is using Camera B. The Mary Ann drove ashore at Kingsdown in wind conditions SE force 9 on 29 September while on a voyage from North Shields to Cherbourg with coal. She was refloated only to go ashore again off Sandown Castle where she became a total wreck. Negatives numbers N19604 to N19607 were taken on the same day.
